I’m delighted to have some new contributors to the site, Paul Matthews and his father Michael who took a series of photos around Consett and the steelworks in the late 1970s and early 1980s providing a fascinating record of times past in the town. My thanks to them both for allowing me to publish their photos on the site.
First up, we have three of a shunter moving coal wagons around the site of Consett Station. Whilst these photos were taken prior to the closure of the steelworks in September 1980, the coal yards at Consett and Blackhill were the last rail served businesses to use the line.

An excellent set of images. After all these years its great see new and previously unseen images appearing on the site
Thanks Bob and it all started thanks to some of your images…
In the last month, I’ve been sent over 110 new images that I’ve never seen before and I currently have nearly 350 waiting to be uploaded which should keep me going for quite some time!
Great photo’s, I recall one day propelling a rake of empty 21 t hoppers in the high yard on to the brake van for departure to Tyne Yard, attach van ,right away, only to discover van still attached to incoming load . Happy days.
Great photos. It looks like 08085 a Local NE locomotive at the time.
I’m looking forward to seeing more like this John.
Especially of the final track lifting trains!
