At Oxhill, on the outskirts of Stanley, the original route of the Pontop and South Shields railway crossed over the A693 road by means of a level crossing controlled by a signal box.
The line joined a number of local collieries such as South Moor (Charley Pit), South Moor (Louisa Pit which was situated where the ASDA supermarket is today), West Stanley and Morrison Busty Colliery, with the Annfield Plain Deviation of the Tyne Dock to Consett line at Annfield East junction.
