At South Pelaw, trains of twenty one 21T hoppers of coal would arrive. Due to the gradients up to Consett a Q6 or a K1 could only manage 7 wagons at a time (even a 9F could only manage around 12 unassisted).
As a result, at South Pelaw, the train would be split with 14 wagons being removed and the remaining 7 wagons plus the brake van would then go to Consett. The Q6 would then return with the brake can for another 7 and then return again for the final 7. This involved some shunting and running round involving the up sidings that sat between the lines to Ouston Junction and Consett.
Taken by Russell Benson and courtesy of Dave Dunn of the Armstrong Photographic Trust, here are four shots of Q6 63395 at South Pelaw in 1966 undertaking such a move.
Thanks to Martin Lloyd for letting me know that the loco is now in the care of the North East Locomotive Preservation Group at Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where it awaits the fitting of a new cylinder.
The tracks no longer exist but that loco still remains in the care of the NELPG.
