From Bill Watson, two excellent photos of Type 2 (later Class 24) diesels at South Pelaw in 1966. Added to the 1960 – 1969 page.
In 1966, a type 2 diesel (Class 24) is ready to head up the hill to Consett having split it’s train at South Pelaw. Note that the locomotive has the additional pipe work to operate the doors on the iron ore hoppers. As there is nobody in the cab and that looks like a tail lamp, I would suggest he’s propelling the van and waiting for the road over the crossover.
I would imagine the near loco and van are waiting to bank the coal train. I often saw a loco and van on banking duties. That being said, I have no recollection of the event.
A bit more thought. The Class 24-hauled coal train has arrived at South Pelaw and another Class 24 locomotive and van wait on the adjacent track (bottom image). The top image shows the train engine having the road and the single locomotive with tail lamp still shown in the background and as the coal sidings appear full, will probably be the banking locomotive. Pure conjecture – as I have no recollection of the events! Possibly 1967
