We wander away from the main line to Consett today with an image of Pelton Level from Jim Sedgwick. Pelton Level was situated at the bottom of the Eden Incline and the top of the Waldridge Incline. The map below shows it’s relative location to Stella Gill yard (bottom right) and Pelton Station (centre right) on the main line to Consett.
The site had a single road engine shed and water tower and is now part of the Roseberry Grange golf course in Grange Villa.
In the photo below, the lines to the left led to Burnhope Colliery, the line of the far right originally led to Eden Incline (closed by this time) and on the extreme right can be seen part of the NCB Coal Washery at High Handenhold. Above the 21T hopper wagons can be seen the lines for the overhead hopper system used to remove waste from the site, the netting under the lines was there to protect the railway underneath.
