Class 37s (Growlers) were a staple on the line from the late 1960s but Class 31s (Goyles) were a rare site when the line was in revenue earning service but a few did put in an appearance on track lifting trains in later years. Here we have four new photos from Craig Oliphant of 31s and 37s at South Pelaw:

BR Eastern Region engineers trains in 1980s normally were hauled by Class 31, 37, or 47 loco power.
I recall them on civil engineers ballast trains very clearly in Essex & East Anglia. Train crews were generally good too. We needed good crews when we were dropping ‘top stone’ ballast from Sealion hopper wagons at about walking pace during track relaying.
Good and great memories are recalled from my early British Rail civil engineering career. These BR era pics remind me of a bygone age.
